Went to the Defence Academy’s Purple Ball tonight with about 1200 others. Dinner began with trapeze artists and the band of the Royal Marines. Poor weather put off the flying display and the Red Devils.

The opera singers during dinner were fabulous and the post-dinner band was pretty good. The ladies never seem to tire of chocolate fountains and the casino was popular. The company was excellent, naturally.

Rather sodden cricket pitch beneath the marquee. I wouldn’t like to see the groundsman’s face when they take it away.

I’m ready for summer’s return – it’s a crap day for a skydive again – but I suspect not as ready as those with flooded homes.
