Rescue plan: What does this mean for the public finances?


The £500 billion worth of public money being staked to stabilise the British banking system will push Government borrowing even higher and raise the prospect of spending cuts and tax increases in years to come.

Norman Lamont, the former Chancellor said: “We will be burdened with debt interest and increased taxes for years to come.”
