The proceedings of today’s Protection of Freedoms Bill Committee reminded me of Benjamin Franklin’s famous quote:
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.
Inasmuch as it’s a sentiment many in this country may once have shared, today’s political terrain seems to have strayed far from it.
If the people of this country wish to live in liberty under the law, then a sea change will be required.
