New report: HS2 alternatives from the 51m Alliance

The 51m Alliance of nineteen local authorities opposed to HS2 (including Bucks County Council) have recently launched their ‘Alternative Investment Strategy’. It challenges the current DfT rationale of ‘capacity’ being the main reason for HS2 and proposes a comprehensive package of national investment in infrastructure to rebalance the nation’s economy. In its executive summary, 51M Alliance said: The local authorities in 51m are fully committed to investing in key infrastructure critical for the country’s future success. 51m has already set out […]

County Council Members’ Allowances remain frozen

Bucks County Council recently approved an independent panel’s recommendations that included continuing a freeze on Member allowances since 2009 and identifying savings of over £60,000 a year. Mike Appleyard, Deputy Leader of Buckinghamshire County Council said: Clearly the Panel’s recommendations on Members’ allowances rightly reflected the financial pressures on today’s public sector. In total, 10,000 tonnes of salt will be delivered across the five stores in Bucks. Apart from spreading on roads to combat freezing conditions, TfB also fill […]

Bucks County pledge extra £3m on local road repairs

The Conservative-run County Council has announced a one-off £3 million addition to this year’s £25m budget for road maintenance in Buckinghamshire. Many people have voiced their concern over the state of Wycombe’s roads. This move by the County Council should start to improve matters. As a frequent road user in Wycombe and the wider Buckinghamshire area, both by car and on my motorcycle, I look forward to the prospective improvements. While these additional funds will help to reduce the backlog […]

Polling stations open now in Bucks CC election

Polling is in progress today across the country. In Wycombe, we have elections for Bucks County Council and a by-election for Disraeli ward of Wycombe District Council. The BFP reports that our Town Crier has made a final appeal for people to vote. So far, turnout appears to be consistent with precedent for local elections: rather low. My wife and I voted this morning in West Wycombe. I understand people were turning out at a rate of about 10 per […]
