Mortality rate for Hospitals in Buckinghamshire improving

The recent publication of the Dr Foster Good Hospital Guide 2013 showed that the mortality rate for hospitals in Buckinghamshire has continued to improve over the last year. The Hospital Standardised Mortality Rate is now in the ‘as expected range’ for the first time in recent years. The Guide looks at a number of different indicators to build up a picture of the quality and safety of a hospital’s services. Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust has improved in a number of […]

A Guided Tour of the New NHS

This week saw the launch of the All Party Parliamentary Health Group’s latest publication: A Guided Tour of the New NHS. From the preface: The Health and Social Care Act introduced a localised clinician-led commissioning structure, a greater role for local authorities in public health and Health and Wellbeing Boards, and the creation of various new national bodies. Yet there remain serious challenges which the system and its new leaders must grapple with: a tight financial environment; pressure from growing demand; a […]

A Call to Action by the NHS: 21 Nov at 6.30pm at Hamilton School

Chiltern Clinical Commissioning Group public meeting Thursday, 21st November at 6.30pm at Hamilton School, Hampden Road, High Wycombe, HP13 6SX The NHS is built on the concept of quality care for patients, free at the point of use, paid for through taxation. Medical advances and increased patient numbers now mean these principles are under increasing pressure. Although the Government has increased NHS funding by 1% a year patients, quite rightly, also have rising expectations. This is why NHS England is […]

Calling for a white paper on emergency and out-of-hours health care

Post Image

Yesterday in the Commons, I asked the Health Secretary the bring forward a white paper on A&E and out-of-hours care: Steve Baker (Wycombe) (Con): The A and E crisis in Wycombe results from the closure of the department under the previous Government. Although I would love to lay the blame squarely on Labour, is not the truth that, over the life of the NHS, clinical practice and management have changed substantially? Will my right hon. Friend consider producing a White […]

Bucks Health Select Committee today

Today, Bucks County Council’s Health and Adult Social Care Select Committee heard evidence on the progress of the recent Better Healthcare in Bucks changes. I published my written submission here. As I explained at the meeting, I want three big changes: An injection of realism into the debate. I quoted remarks by the Medical Director of NHS England, Sir Bruce Keogh, in The Evidence Base from the Urgent and Emergency Care Review (PDF). He said: Twenty years ago most A&E departments could […]

Post Image

Via NHS England, The NHS belongs to the people: a call to action: NHS England has today called on the public, NHS staff and politicians to have an open and honest debate about the future shape of the NHS in order to meet rising demand, introduce new technology and meet the expectations of its patients. This is set against a backdrop of flat funding which, if services continue to be delivered in the same way as now, will result in […]

You too can lose weight fast with The Sherlock Diet!

Post Image

Apparently the UK faces an obesity crisis. Helpfully, as reported in the national news [1,2], I am annually weighed in public in High Wycombe. This year, I had lost weight thanks to The Sherlock Diet. Today, I have lost 10kg since Christmas, 8 of them in the last 10 weeks. I was significantly overweight with a Body Mass Index of 29, just 3 kg off obese. My wife, a GP, hinted fairly heavily that the trajectory of my health was […]

Why not 24/7 quality care?

Via 82% more chance of dying in surgery at the weekend: Shock finding of report into NHS operations | Mail Online. Patients who undergo planned operations at the weekend rather than a Monday are 82 per cent more likely to die. Shocking findings show that death rates for elective procedures increase throughout the working week. This will add to mounting concern about NHS patients receiving poor care during ‘antisocial’ hours when consultants are off duty. See also The Telegraph’s spectacularly […]
