The “Deluxe Executive Suites” in the Hotel Park City’s cottages are each equipped with an outdoor “Nordic hot tub” which cannot be switched off: they run continuously to avoid freezing. Apart from being a grotesque waste of energy – another subject – these tubs all emit the same low buzz from their pumps, all the time.

As we moved around the suite, we found quiet spots and loud spots. For example, sitting upright in one chair was noisy to the pit of the stomach but leaning forward a foot found near silence. It seems the hot tubs produce interference patterns throughout the cottages.

We moved rooms this evening, downgrading: an interesting physics experiment, but what a cock up for the hotel. I wonder how many complaints they get.
