Joining a Healthwatch Bucks Dignity in Care ‘Enter and View’ Project

Post Image

In 2014, Bucks County Council commissioned Healthwatch Bucks to undertake a review of health and social care provision in residential homes and domiciliary care across Bucks. Since then, Healthwatch Bucks has been using its statutory powers to ‘Enter and View’ health and care providers and independently monitor the quality and effectiveness of care being provided. The goals of enter and view are to: Give service users and their carers a voice, sharing these with Commissioners and care providers Make recommendations on areas […]

Problems with Transport to Hospital – Healthwatch Bucks Transport Report

Post Image

Healthwatch Bucks recently published a report which identifies that local people are still finding it difficult to access hospital services. The report attributes these difficulties to both gaps in transport services and a lack of awareness of transport options. For many residents in Bucks, the stress, anxiety and cost associated with getting to their appointments has become a major issue. This is a problem I have highlighted previously, when I caught the Arriva bus to Stoke Mandeville Hospital in 2012 […]

Healthwatch England investigate third-party complaints

Healthwatch England recently investigated healthcare providers across England to discover if they accepted complaints raised by people wishing to report incidents of poor care relating to others. Worryingly, 46 out of the 123 trusts that responded to the Freedom of Information request responded ‘no’ when asked whether or not they formally record complaints made by third parties or so called ‘citizen whistleblowers’. In addition, when asked about policies they had in place, Healthwatch received a variety of responses including: Many stating incorrectly that […]

It’s time to improve the health and social care complaints system – Healthwatch shows how

Post Image

Healthwatch England is the national consumer champion in health and care. They have significant statutory powers to ensure the voice of the consumer is strengthened and heard by those who commission, deliver and regulate health and care services. These powers include the right to enter and view health providers, for which I have had the training through Healthwatch Bucks. Nationally, Healthwatch has prioritised health and social care complaints: The health and social care complaints system doesn’t work because it was never […]

A Guided Tour of the New NHS

This week saw the launch of the All Party Parliamentary Health Group’s latest publication: A Guided Tour of the New NHS. From the preface: The Health and Social Care Act introduced a localised clinician-led commissioning structure, a greater role for local authorities in public health and Health and Wellbeing Boards, and the creation of various new national bodies. Yet there remain serious challenges which the system and its new leaders must grapple with: a tight financial environment; pressure from growing demand; a […]

Healthwatch: “All of us have a right to be heard”

Post Image

The public health and social care champion, Healthwatch, today launched its annual report 2012/13, demanding a greater role for patients in the NHS. It found that: 1 in 3 of us report experiencing or knowing someone who has experienced abuse, neglect or malpractice whilst being cared for. More than half of us who have experienced poor care in the last three years didn’t report it because we didn’t trust the system to act. An overwhelming 94% of us think the nation’s […]

Why I am becoming a Healthwatch volunteer

Post Image

Healthwatch England, the independent consumer champion for health and social care in England, has responded to the Keogh Review: There needs to be a profound change in how the NHS listens to the feedback, concerns and complaints of the patients. Listening properly and then taking action is all that needs to happen. It shouldn’t be difficult. The Care Quality Commission has a key role in making sure it invests properly in patient engagement – a hospital should only be judged as […]
