Home » Where I stand

I am a Conservative to preserve all that is good in our constitution, a Radical to remove all that is bad. I seek to preserve property and to respect order, and I equally decry the appeal to the passions of the many or the prejudices of the few.

— Benjamin Disraeli, twice Conservative Prime Minister, in a campaign speech at High Wycombe in 1832.

This page sketches my approach to politics and society. For specific issues, please use the drop-down menu for this section, above. This is by no means a complete statement nor have I provided a complete list of issues: constituents should contact me if they have specific questions.

In five principles:

  • Peace.
  • Family as the building block of society, not the state.
  • Equality before the law.
  • Freedom from arbitrary government – the classical Rule of Law.
  • Property – the unity of ownership and control.

As an engineer, I am pragmatic but I recognise the importance of having good ideas, even if they can only be applied imperfectly. For a longer explanation, see this post.

I am concerned with the alignment of ends and means. If the end we have chosen is a healthy society in which people are prosperous, secure and free then we had better foster positive relationships, produce some real wealth and create an environment of responsible liberty with the best possible systems of healthcare and education.

I believe that every person is valuable and that every person who can should produce something of value for others.

I am for a society based on unhampered mutual cooperation, sound property rights, contractual exchange, the rule of law and a helpful attitude to other people. I detest top-down bureaucratic control because it interferes with the peaceful cooperation that is civilised society and it just plain does not work.

My political views are explored in detail through these blog posts. Some of the literature which has informed them may be found in my Amazon bookstore and in my book reviews.
