EU Referendum message to the electors of Wycombe

Post Image

In the EU referendum, the UK voted to leave the European Union. For all the reasons I have set out, recently and over 9 years,  I believe the people of the UK have made the right choice for our country. We must now form a Government willing to implement the dual mandate of the Conservative manifesto and the Referendum result. We know the public took this decision seriously and that many people disagree. After a Remain campaign which relentlessly stoked fear […]

The EU costs us too much, we don’t have control and the bill is growing

Post Image

The UK is billed over £50m a day by the EU. Our contribution has grown over the years. We can expect it to grow in the future. We receive a rebate equivalent to £13.6 million a day, applied a year in arrears. It is negotiable. We receive £5.9 billion per year or £16.1 million a day back in ways we cannot control. We make a net contribution of £8.5 billion a year, equivalent to £23 million a day. In 2014, our Prime Minister refused to pay an […]

The economic consequences of Scottish separation

Post Image

I received today a copy of Ewen Stewart‘s paper for the Scottish Research Society, Much Cost, Little Benefit – The economic consequences of Scottish separation. This excellent paper covers currency, debt and borrowing, public spending and taxation, oil revenues, the Scottish banks, trade, population, energy, defence and more. The conclusion is robust: Scotland will either choose continuing union or separation this September. If Scotland chooses separation, it will not be in any true sense independent. It could not exercise policy in […]

Democratic self-determination is a basic right: both Kashmir and the UK should have referenda on who governs them

Post Image

After Easter, I spent a week in Pakistan and Kashmir, visiting Islamabad, Thara, Sava, Dadyal, Mirpur and Skardu, which is in the northern Gilgit-Baltistan province. During a live news conference with Kashmir’s Prime Minister, I was asked why I take the time to support the cause of democratic self-determination for Kashmir. There are three reasons. First, the essence of representative democracy is representation. I joined the Party in the Autumn of 2007 when, thanks to the transformation of the EU […]

National Insurance Fund: No quick fix

Post Image

This post is by Tim Hewish, my Parliamentary Assistant. A number of Steve’s constituents have written to him regarding the National Insurance Fund (NIF).  The Fund was flagged in the media when it lost £4.5bn back in March which is the first time since 1993 that it had decreased. This was largely attributable to an increase in benefit payments and a reduction in National Insurance contributions. The argument being advocated by a select number of pension lobby groups is that the NIF […]

Tonight: Britain’s Trillion Pound Horror Story

Post Image

Britain’s Trillion Pound Horror Story will be transmitted on Channel 4 tonight at 9pm: Film maker Martin Durkin explains the full extent of the financial mess we are in: an estimated £4.8 trillion of national debt and counting. It’s so big that even if every home in the UK was sold it wouldn’t raise enough cash to pay it off. Durkin argues that to put Britain back on track we need to radically rethink the role of the state, stop politicians […]
