The Apple App Store and other innovations

Post Image

Apple just added the App Store to OS X: Suddenly, it is as easy to find and install new applications on Apple computers as it has been on iPhone and iPad. No doubt this will catch on… And I just discovered how much progress Ubuntu Linux has made. It’s interesting that this Debian-derived distribution seems to have surpassed RedHat for popular use since that firm became more commercial, splitting out Red Hat Enterprise and Fedora. It’s great fun, freedom. See […]

Nanosolar

Nanosolar reckon solar power can now be cheaper than coal: Their PowerSheet cells contrast the current solar technology systems by reducing the cost of production from $3 a watt to a mere 30 cents per watt. This makes, for the first time in history, solar power cheaper than burning coal. Some old news in the Telegraph too.

Suffocation for business innovation

There is the potential for a long post here, but for the moment, I’ll stick to “Innovation grants”. A small client worked for weeks, hiring consultants, to obtain an innovation grant for part of one R&D effort. They won a grant, and then spent the duration of the  project accounting for its use in excruciating detail. The person who did that accounting was a key employee: there was no one else available in such a lean and effective company. By […]
