Vote on second reading of the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill

Last night, the House of Commons voted on second reading of the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill. The result was 498 in favour with 114 against, a majority of 384. Only one Conservative MP voted against the principle of the Bill. A full list by party of how MPs voted may be found here. There were some outstanding speeches in the course of the debate. Former minister and staunch supporter of the European Union Alistair Burt said, after explaining he would […]

Book Review – All Out War: The Full Story of How Brexit Sank Britain’s Political Class, Tim Shipman

In its coverage of the most prominent characters and events of the referendum campaign and leadership contest, Shipman’s account is one of breathtaking completeness and great accuracy. To read All Out War is to relive the final year of the decades-long EU campaign. In all the circumstances, Shipman was right to emphasise the central figures, not least to constrain what is already a book of over 600 pages. However, many of the Parliamentarians who struggled resolutely for decades to achieve […]

EU Referendum message to the electors of Wycombe

Post Image

In the EU referendum, the UK voted to leave the European Union. For all the reasons I have set out, recently and over 9 years,  I believe the people of the UK have made the right choice for our country. We must now form a Government willing to implement the dual mandate of the Conservative manifesto and the Referendum result. We know the public took this decision seriously and that many people disagree. After a Remain campaign which relentlessly stoked fear […]

Reaction to the Wycombe District EU Referendum result

Post Image

In the EU referendum, Wycombe District voted 48-52 for Remain. Across Buckinghamshire, every counting area voted the other way to the principal MP in that area: Aylesbury, Chiltern, South Bucks. Obviously, I was disappointed but I was also surprised: when campaigning in the Parliamentary constituency, we found voters were overwhelmingly for Leave. I have now looked at the results in detail for an explanation. First, via the BBC, I see most of the Thames Valley voted Remain, in contrast to most of […]

Please vote to leave the European Union and renew the UK TODAY

Post Image

Today, we will choose together what kind of government will best promote our common good for many years to come. I believe it is time to throw off the institutions of the European Union, a centralising bureaucracy whose existence embodies the dismal fear of self-governing peoples now commonly afflicting our ruling elites. I believe that a fundamental right of a free people is to have the dignity of choosing peacefully at the ballot box who shall govern. That government derives […]

Remaining in the EU means more power will flow to the EU from the UK

Post Image

Local voters want to end the live export of animals. Parliament cannot do so in the EU. Local voters also oppose aspects of the EU’s TTIP trade deal but trade policy is decided by the EU, not the UK. The EU can speak on our behalf on foreign affairs, which affects the security of British people. Plans to strengthen European foreign policy and back it with European armed forces have been delayed until after the referendum. According to the President of the […]

The EU wastes your money

Post Image

According to the European Court of Auditors, €7 billion of the 2013 budget was misspent. However, the EU has a very loose definition of the word ‘misspent’, Here are a few examples of projects judged to be money well spent: €500,000 paid to two fishermen to scrap their boat in the interests of reducing overfishing. That cleared their debts and paid for a new, smaller boat in which they continued fishing. €2.5 million to support an Austrian nomadic contemporary dance troupe. […]

Our great country will thrive in the world outside the EU

Post Image

Our great country will thrive in the world beyond the EU. We have: The 5th largest economy in the world. The 4th most powerful military in the world. A permanent seat on the EU security council. The largest financial centre in the world. Some of the finest universities in the world. A globally-used language, democratic system and common law. Strong relationships across the globe. Don’t listen to those who talk Great Britain down. Let’s leave and put the UK on a brighter path of prosperity through self-government […]
