Our EU Referendum choice this Thursday, 23 June

Post Image

We will soon choose together what kind of government will best promote our common good. There are risks on both sides of the question on the ballot paper.  In a world of unexpected events, trial and error, we need institutions of government which are agile and accountable to the public. Our parliamentary democracy has evolved over centuries to provide both. Today, the European Union sits above our Parliament and our law. It is failing. High youth unemployment, extraordinary monetary policy […]

Outside the EU, the UK can make its own trade deals

Post Image

Inside the EU, the UK is unable to make any trade deals of its own. We must rely on the EU negotiating on our behalf. We are at the mercy of 27 other EU countries serving their own interests. For example, the EU trade deal with Canada is stalled in a row over visa-free travel for Romania and Bulgaria. The Remain campaign is peddling scare stories, pessimism and implausible assumptions about our trade. It’s in everyone’s mutual interests smoothly to agree to continue open trading relations. There […]

There will be further integration whatever the outcome of the referendum

Post Image

The EU is always changing. This isn’t a choice between change and the status quo. Voting to Leave is to vote for freedom and control; voting to Remain is to vote for a future of further integration which is out of our hands. The EU’s recent “Five President’s Report” sets out transfers of control over: Taxation Social security Property rights Insolvency law Company law Our place in international institutions  This report stated that: This will inevitably involve sharing more sovereignty over time The European Commission have […]

Every EU citizen has a right to live and work in the UK

Post Image

EU citizenship gives the right to live and work anywhere in the EU on the same basis as the citizens of each member state. Every citizen of each member state is also an EU citizen. Within the EU, we are forbidden from controlling migration from the EU. Meanwhile, local people’s families outside the EU often face harsh barriers just to visit. In the ten years to 2024, the UK’s population is projected to grow by 440,000 per year – roughly a city the […]

UK power in the EU institutions is falling

Post Image

The EU has grown from nine to twenty-eight member countries. Having begun as a coal and steel trading bloc, the EU has expanded vastly over the last century. This expansion has meant less representation for UK voters and less accountability for EU officials. Regulations and legislation emanate from the European Commission, which is entirely unelected. The European Parliament has substantially less authority than the Commission: it cannot propose new legislation. While this institution is directly elected, only 73 of 751 of its […]

A common market with the world, not a failing common government with Europe

Post Image

International free trade is vital for any modern economy. The EU is in charge of our international trade: within the EU, the UK is unable to agree its own trade deals. Today, we trade more with countries outside the EU (56 percent) than within (44 percent).  The UK has a trade surplus of £31 billion with non-EU countries per year, but a deficit of £67.8 billion with the EU. See the relevant Commons Library brief for more. In some cases, we do more trade with countries without a trade deal than […]

The EU holds down wages and business growth

Post Image

EU regulations cost the UK economy over £33.3 billion every year. While only 6 percent of UK firms export to the EU, 100 percent of them must obey EU regulations. The Bank of England has calculated that for every 10 percent increase in immigration, wages for the poorest fall by around 2 percent. The Chairman of Britain Stronger In Europe, Lord Rose, has admitted that wages will rise if we leave the EU. Outside the EU, the UK’s democratically elected government will be free to pursue policies which will create more […]

Independence is a new opportunity for the UK

Post Image

The world faces big problems and the EU cannot cope. We love Europe but we don’t need to accept the supremacy of EU law to enjoy friendship and cooperation. Non-EU arrangements like NATO and the “Five Eyes” intelligence sharing network with the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand do not require us to subordinate UK law. Outside the EU, the UK can regain power and influence in international organisations like the World Trade Organisation. Business for Britain’s Change or Go report examined 18 policy areas, […]

The EU did not allow our Government the change we need

Post Image

David Cameron was allowed no meaningful change when he went to Europe to renegotiate Britain’s deal with the EU. This is our opportunity to decide if we want to remain in the EU on the basis of the Lisbon Treaty, which the Conservative Party under David Cameron opposed. The EU has a flag, anthem, parliament, civil service, executive, supreme court, currency and overseas embassies. These are all characteristics of a modern day country. This is our chance to accept or reject […]
